Boseman grew up in South Carolina, studied directing at Howard, and started in theatre, winning a Drama League fellowship and writing the 2005 play Deep Azure. He moved to screen work with the NBC series Persons Unknown in 2010, then broke through playing Jackie Robinson in 42 (2013), followed by James Brown in Get on Up (2014) and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall (2017). In 2016 he joined the MCU as T'Challa, appearing in four films including Black Panther (2018), which made him the first Black actor to headline a Marvel feature and landed him on the Time 100 list. That same year, privately, doctors diagnosed colon cancer. He told no one outside his closest circle and kept working - through the sequels, through the voice role in What If...? that won him a posthumous Emmy, through his final performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, which earned him a Golden Globe, a SAG award, and an Oscar nomination after his death on August 28, 2020.
