Born in Mexico City in 1983 to a Kenyan politician father, Lupita Nyong'o grew up in Kenya from age three, studied film at Hampshire College, and worked as a Hollywood production assistant before earning an MFA from Yale School of Drama. Her feature debut came in 2013 as Patsey in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave, which landed her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She followed with a Tony-nominated turn on Broadway in Eclipsed (2015), then entered the blockbuster arena with motion-capture work as Maz Kanata in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the role of Nakia in Black Panther (2018) and its 2022 sequel. Between Marvel films she starred in Jordan Peele's Us (2019) and A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), voiced the wolf Raksha in The Jungle Book and the lead in The Wild Robot (2024), and will play Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026). In 2019 she published the children's book Sulwe, which hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
