Born in Highland Park, Illinois in 1957, Cassidy graduated from LSU and its medical school before working as a gastroenterologist in Baton Rouge. He entered politics through the Louisiana State Senate in 2006, then flipped a U.S. House seat in 2008 by beating Democratic incumbent Don Cazayoux. Six years later he won a Senate race against Mary Landrieu and settled into the moderate wing of his caucus. The break came in 2021: Cassidy was one of seven Republicans who voted to convict Trump for incitement of insurrection, earning an immediate censure from Louisiana's GOP. He kept pressing, calling for Trump to drop out after the classified documents indictment in 2023 and refusing to endorse him in the general. When Cassidy ran for a third term in 2026, Trump backed challenger Julia Letlow - and Cassidy finished third in the primary with under 25% of the vote, the first elected senator since 2012 to lose renomination.
