King of Hungary (1016-1063)
A medieval Hungarian king who survived exile after his father's execution, clawed his way back to power by overthrowing his own brother, then died when his throne physically collapsed beneath him.
Béla was born around 1015 into a younger branch of the Árpád dynasty, baptized Adalbert. In 1031, after their father Vazul was executed, he fled Hungary with his brothers Levente and Andrew, settling in Poland where he married Richeza, daughter of King Mieszko II Lambert. Years later his brother Andrew, now King of Hungary, invited him home and granted him control of the ducatus — roughly a third of the kingdom.
