Marie Alexandrine von Vetsera was born 19 March 1871 into Austrian nobility. She became involved with Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, a liaison that ended on 30 January 1889 when both were discovered dead at his hunting lodge in Mayerling. The deaths were ruled an apparent murder-suicide. The incident — known simply as Mayerling — has generated speculation and retellings for over a century, fixing Vetsera's name to a single winter morning when she was seventeen.
