About this person
Ausonius taught rhetoric in Burdigala around 310-395, a polished provincial who made his living with words. He tutored the future Emperor Gratian, a connection that later earned him the consulship when his student took power. His poem Mosella described the River Moselle in careful detail, while Ephemeris chronicled an ordinary day hour by hour. The rest of his work circled his own world: family, friends, teachers, the comfortable class he moved among. He treated meter like a puzzle to solve, technique as its own reward.
