Arsinoë IV was the youngest daughter of Ptolemy XII Auletes, born sometime between 68 and 63 BC into the final generation of the Ptolemaic dynasty. In 48–47 BC she claimed the throne of Egypt and co-rulership with her brother Ptolemy XIII, positioning herself directly against her sister Cleopatra VII. She commanded forces during the siege of Alexandria in 47 BC, but the campaign collapsed with Ptolemy XIII's defeat at the Battle of the Nile. Julius Caesar took her to Rome as a prisoner of war, then exiled her to the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus in Roman Anatolia. She lived there until 41 BC, w…
