Željko Ražnatović led the Serb Volunteer Guard through the Yugoslav Wars, a paramilitary force that committed murder, rape, and ethnic cleansing across Eastern Bosnia. He spent decades on Interpol's most wanted list and was indicted for crimes against humanity before his assassination in 2000.
Born 17 April 1952, Ražnatović spent the 1970s and 1980s on Interpol's top ten list for robberies and murders across Europe, escaping jail twice. During the Yugoslav Wars he commanded the Serb Volunteer Guard, considered one of the most feared and effective paramilitary units of the conflict. His forces carried out crimes in Eastern Bosnia including murder, pillaging, rape and ethnic cleansings. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia indicted him for crimes against humanity.
