António Joaquim Rodrigues Ribeiro was born on 3 December 1944 and spent most of his life unknown. He adopted the stage name António Variações and began recording in the early 1980s, layering traditional Portuguese rhythms over contemporary arrangements in a way no one had tried. The timing mattered - Portugal had overthrown dictatorship in the Carnation Revolution of 1974, and the liberalization that followed needed its own language. Variações made music that felt both ancient and suddenly new, provocative in content and original in form. He died on 13 June 1984, his career spanning only a few years, but the work he left became a landmark in Portuguese popular music.
