Antônio Carlos Jobim was born in Rio de Janeiro on 25 January 1927, a pianist, guitarist, and composer who would become one of the most celebrated songwriters of the 20th century. In the 1960s he pioneered bossa nova, merging samba with cool jazz in a way that made Brazilian music an international idiom. His compositions entered the standard repertoire — played and recorded worldwide since the early '60s — and the 1964 album Getz/Gilberto, which featured several of his works, won Album of the Year and sent "Garota de Ipanema" to Record of the Year as a single.
