Born Marcus Vinícius da Cruz e Mello Moraes on 19 October 1913, he started as a poet and essayist before lyrics pulled him toward music. The collaborations with Jobim and a shifting cast of partners became the engine of bossa nova - a genre he didn't just chronicle but built, line by line. He recorded albums, performed, and wore the nickname "O Poetinha" while also working a parallel career in Brazilian diplomacy. The two lives ran alongside each other until his death on 9 July 1980, leaving behind the songs that taught the world what Brazilian longing sounded like.
