German politician (1884-1942)
He founded the party that became the Nazi Party, then watched his protégé Adolf Hitler seize control and push him aside in 1921.
Anton Drexler was born on 13 June 1884 and spent the 1920s as a far-right agitator within Germany's Völkisch movement. He founded the German Workers' Party (DAP), a pan-German and antisemitic organization that would become the structural basis for the Nazi Party. Drexler brought Hitler into the fold and mentored him through his early political years. In 1921, during a power dispute, Hitler forced Drexler out as party chair, ending his role as a Nazi insider and securing his own dominance. Drexler died on 24 February 1942, long after his political relevance had collapsed.
