A Russian grand duchess who became Queen of the Netherlands but never stopped being Russian. Anna Pavlovna transplanted imperial court protocol to The Hague and spent forty years ruling charity work instead of policy, her heart stubbornly anchored in St. Petersburg.
Born in January 1795 into the Romanov dynasty, Anna Pavlovna married King William II of the Netherlands and brought Moscow manners to a country she never considered home. She imposed strict royal etiquette on Dutch court life while maintaining the identity of an imperial Russian grand duchess throughout her reign.
