Byzantine Emperor from 1282 to 1328
The Byzantine emperor who watched his restored empire begin its irreversible collapse — losing Anatolia to the Turks before being forced from the throne by his own grandson in a civil war.
Andronikos II Palaiologos reigned from 1282 to 1328, a span that marked the beginning of Byzantium's final decline after its recent restoration. The Turks swept through and conquered most of the empire's remaining Anatolian territories during his rule. His last years on the throne were consumed by the First Palaiologan Civil War, fought against his own grandson. The war ended in 1328 with Andronikos forced to abdicate. He spent the remainder of his life in a monastery, dying there on 13 February 1332.
