Biography

About

Born in the colonial Carolinas in 1767, Jackson became a frontier lawyer in Tennessee, then a planter who enslaved hundreds. He built his reputation as a militia commander during the Creek War of 1813–1814, seizing vast indigenous territories, then became a national hero after his 1815 victory at the Battle of New Orleans against the British. He lost the 1824 presidential race in the House despite winning the popular vote, but swept back in 1828.
