Companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (died 657)
A companion of Muhammad who walked through the founding violence of Islam twice over: his parents were the faith's first martyrs, and he died nearly a century later in a civil war between the caliph's armies, still fighting.
Born around 567 CE, Ammar converted early through Abu Bakr's invitation and became one of the muhajirun who migrated to Medina, where he helped build the Prophet's Mosque and rode out to most of the early expeditions. His parents, Sumayya and Yasir ibn Amir, had already been killed as the first martyrs of the young Muslim community. He fought in the Ridda wars under Caliph Abu Bakr, commanded forces in the conquest of Iran under Umar, and served as governor of Kufa.
