Companion (Sahabiyyah) of Muhammad
The first person killed for joining Muhammad's early community — a woman whose death in 615 made her Islam's first martyr.
Sumayyah bint Khabbat lived in seventh-century Arabia when Muhammad began preaching. She converted, and her decision carried a price: around 615, she was killed because of her faith. Her husband, Yasir ibn Yasir, followed shortly after, also executed for conversion. Their son was Ammar ibn Yasir. The sequence of their deaths established a grim precedent — she became the first martyr of the emerging Muslim community, he the first male martyr. Her name appears in sources as both bint Khabbat and bint Khayyat.
