Queen of the Ostrogoths (495-535)
An Ostrogothic queen who spoke three languages and ruled alone — until Gothic nobles killed her in 535. Her murder gave Justinian the pretext he needed to invade Italy.
Amalasuintha was born in 495 and became regent of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in 526 when her son Athalaric took the throne as a child. Educated in Greek, Gothic, and Latin, she drew praise from Cassiodorus and Procopius for her intellect, but her affinity for Roman culture and her authority as a woman unsettled the Gothic nobles at court. When Athalaric died young, she became queen regnant outright. Six months later she was deposed and killed. Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I took her death as his justification to launch the Gothic War.
