Alice Roberts turns bones and burial sites into prime-time television - a rare academic who can hold both a scalpel and a camera, translating human origins for millions without dumbing it down.

About this person

Born 19 May 1973, Roberts trained as an anatomist and archaeologist before discovering she could do something most scholars can't: make deep time compelling on screen. By 2012 she'd landed a professor post at the University of Birmingham built around public engagement in science, a title that basically described what she was already doing. She served as president of Humanists UK from January 2019 to May 2022, steering one of Britain's largest non-religious organizations through pandemic and culture war, then stepped back to vice-president. The through-line has always been the same - taking what's technically rigorous and making it land with people who aren't in the lab.
