About this person

Aldo Moro was born 23 September 1916 and rose through Christian Democracy's centre-left wing, serving as party secretary from March 1959 to January 1964. He led Italy as prime minister for five terms between December 1963 and July 1976 - more than six years total - and twice served as foreign minister, where he pushed a pro-Arab policy. His reforms modernized the country's social and economic fabric, but his most consequential move was the Historic Compromise: an accommodation with Communist Party leader Enrico Berlinguer that redrew the possible borders of Italian politics. On 16 March 1978, the Red Brigades kidnapped him off a Roman street. They held him 55 days and killed him 9 May 1978.
