He razed Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple in 70 AD — the siege that ended the First Jewish–Roman War and earned him a triumphal arch that still stands in Rome. Then he became emperor and history remembers him for the Colosseum and disaster relief.
Titus Flavius Vespasianus was born 30 December 39 AD, son of the general who would seize the throne during the Year of the Four Emperors. In 69 AD, when Vespasian was declared emperor, Titus stayed behind in Judaea to finish the war: the following year he besieged Jerusalem, leveled the city, and destroyed the Second Temple. He returned to Rome a victor, served as prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and scandalized society with his affair with Berenice, a Jewish queen.
