Biography

About

Girolamo Savonarola was a Dominican friar from Ferrara whose preaching in Renaissance Florence mixed apocalyptic vision with fury at corruption — clerical, political, economic. In September 1494, when Charles VIII invaded Italy, Savonarola's prophecies seemed to break open: the Medici fled, a republic rose in their place, and the friar became its effective ruler. He declared Florence the coming centre of Christianity and launched a moralistic crusade, recruiting the city's youth to enforce piety and feed bonfires piled with art, books, and vanities.
