A Meccan merchant who commanded armies against Muhammad at Uhud and the Trench, then submitted when the prophet entered Mecca in 630 — and became father-in-law to the man he'd spent years trying to destroy.
Abu Sufyan was a leader and merchant from the Quraysh tribe, leading trade caravans to Syria in his early career. He stood among the main opponents of Muhammad, commanding Meccan forces at the battles of Uhud in 625 and the Trench in 627. When Muhammad entered Mecca in 630, Abu Sufyan was among the first to submit, and was given a stake in the new Muslim state — fighting at the Battle of Hunayn and playing a role in the destruction of the polytheistic sanctuary of al-Lat in Ta'if.
