Hiroyuki Nishimura founded 2channel in 1999, creating what became Japan's largest anonymous message board and a template for image-board culture worldwide. He directed Niwango, the operator behind video platform niconico, until February 2013. In September 2015, Christopher Poole sold him 4chan, a site Poole had started in 2003 and could no longer sustain. A later dispute with 2channel's hosting provider cost Nishimura control of his original creation, so he launched 2ch.sc as a competitor. He writes self-help books, appears on Japanese television, and signs everything hiroyuki, lowercase, a pen name that doubled as username from the start.
