About this person

Takafumi Horie founded Livedoor as a website design operation in the late 1990s and rode Japan's dot-com wave into something larger - a portal that grabbed headlines and market share. The attention made him a celebrity, dubbed "Horiemon" for his resemblance to the cartoon robot cat Doraemon, a nickname popular enough that he put it to a vote and gave it to a racehorse he owned. In 2006 the ride ended: arrest, securities fraud charges, a trial that opened that September. On March 16, 2007, a court sentenced him to two years and six months in prison. He severed all ties with the company.
