Born ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib around 549 CE, he was a leader among the Quraysh tribe in Mecca. When his half-nephew Muhammad began preaching Islam, he stood against him, earning the name Abū Lahab - "Father of the Flame." His opposition was severe enough that an entire chapter of the Quran, Surat Al-Masad, was revealed condemning him by name. He died in 624 CE, his antagonism preserved in scripture.
