Uncle of the Islamic prophet Muḥammad (c.549-c.624)
Muhammad's paternal uncle who became one of his fiercest opponents in Mecca — and the only person condemned by name in the Quran.
Born ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib around 549 CE, he was a leader among the Quraysh tribe in Mecca. When his half-nephew Muhammad began preaching Islam, he stood against him, earning the name Abū Lahab — "Father of the Flame." His opposition was severe enough that an entire chapter of the Quran, Surat Al-Masad, was revealed condemning him by name. He died in 624 CE, his antagonism preserved in scripture.
