Chief Leader of the Quraysh and grandfather of Muhammad (c.497–578)
He held the chieftainship of the Quraysh and became the grandfather of Muhammad — a genealogical fact that placed him at the root of a faith that would outlive empires.
Born Shayba ibn Hashim around 496, he later took the name Abd al-Muttalib, meaning "Servant of Muttalib." He rose to become the fourth chief of the Quraysh tribal confederation, leading one of Mecca's most powerful clans. His grandson would be Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. He died in 578, decades before that grandson's ministry began.
