Algeria's president since 2019, he's the country's sole living head of state after Liamine Zéroual's death in 2026. He holds the defence portfolio and took office in the turbulent aftermath of Abdelaziz Bouteflika's fall.
Born 17 November 1945, Tebboune spent years in housing policy—minister from 2001 to 2002, then again from 2012 to 2017. He served a brief, three-month stint as Prime Minister in mid-2017 before leaving office. Two years later, after Bouteflika's ouster and Abdelkader Bensalah's caretaker term, Tebboune won the presidency in December 2019. He now leads Algeria as both president and minister of defence, the last living person to have held the country's top job.
