Born 19 November 1954, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi rose through Egypt's military to become Minister of Defense in August 2012, appointed under newly elected president Mohamed Morsi after the 2011 revolution. Within a year, amid mass protests against Morsi, Sisi led the military overthrow on 3 July 2013. When Muslim Brotherhood supporters and pro-democracy demonstrators filled camps at al-Nahda and Rabaa al-Adawiya squares, security forces under his command violently cleared them, killing about 3,000 civilians and arresting nearly 19,000.
