About

Born in El Adwah in 1951, Morsi studied metallurgical engineering in Cairo before earning a doctorate in materials science at USC and teaching in California until 1985. Back in Egypt, he joined the Muslim Brotherhood and won a parliamentary seat in 2000 as an independent under Mubarak's restrictions. After the 2011 revolution ousted Mubarak, Morsi led the newly formed Freedom and Justice Party to victory in parliamentary elections, then won the presidency in 2012, ending six decades of military rule.
