Zayd was bought as a slave at the Ukaz market by Khadija's nephew and given to her; she and Muhammad adopted him, and he took their lineage. He became one of the first four converts to Islam, after Khadija, Ali, and Abu Bakr. Later his original lineage was restored just before his second wife, Zaynab bint Jahsh, was divorced and married to Muhammad; Zayd subsequently married into Muhammad's family himself.
