Yuzuru Hanyū

Yuzuru Hanyu started skating at four in Japan and spent eighteen years in competitive men's singles. At sixteen he lived through the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake in Sendai - the disaster became a through-line in his life, shaping charity work and performances dedicated to victims. He won Olympic gold in 2014 and defended it in 2018, the first man since Dick Button to go back-to-back and the first Asian champion in the discipline. Along the way: two World titles, six Japanese nationals, four straight Grand Prix Finals, nineteen world records under the ISU system. In 2020 he closed the Super Slam, the first men's singles skater to win every major junior and senior title. He turned professional in 2022 and launched the Yuzuru Hanyu Ice Story series - solo shows and a solo tour, a new format weaving skating into philosophical narratives with on-screen storytelling. The work has pulled over 200,000 spectators by 2026 and opened what observers call a new genre. He's donated more than $3 million to reconstruction and humanitarian efforts, including all his Olympic prize money and royalties from his four-volume autobiography.
