About this person

Born in Seoul in 1960, Yoon studied law at Seoul National University and built his name as a prosecutor, playing a key role in convicting two former presidents for corruption. Appointed prosecutor general in 2019, he clashed with the Moon administration over investigations into a top official, turning him into a conservative hero. He resigned in 2021, joined the People Power Party, and narrowly won the presidency in March 2022 on a platform of deregulation and opposition to feminism. His term brought friendlier ties with the U.S. and Japan, criticism over the Seoul Halloween crowd crush, a crushing midterm defeat in 2024, and accusations of democratic backsliding. On 3 December 2024, he declared martial law and accused lawmakers of backing North Korea; parliament voted it down within hours. Impeached ten days later, he became the first sitting South Korean president arrested, then the first removed by the Constitutional Court's unanimous vote in April 2025. In February 2026, a court sentenced him to life. He is in Seoul Detention Center, facing more trials.
