Born 13 December 1678, Yinzhen was the fourth son of the Kangxi Emperor, which meant the throne wasn't his by default. He took it anyway after prolonged succession disputes and set to work. Between 1722 and 1735 he cracked down on corruption, overhauled personnel and financial systems, and established the Grand Council — an institution that would shape Qing governance for generations.
