The eighth king of Joseon ruled barely a year before dying at 19, too sick to govern — but well enough to watch his court execute the general who'd saved the kingdom from rebellion.
Yi Hwang was the third son of King Sejo and younger brother to the crown prince, born 23 January 1450. He took the throne despite chronic illness that left him unable to govern effectively. Within his brief reign, courtier Yu Chagwang — jealous and aware the king disliked General Nam I — accused the 28-year-old Minister of Military Affairs of treason. Nam I had crushed Yi Siae's Rebellion alongside General Gang Sun; both men now stood trial before Yejong, were convicted, and executed.
