Biography

About

Born in France on 8 July 1960, Yann LeCun built his career at the intersection of pattern recognition and neural computation. His early work on optical character recognition using convolutional neural networks laid the groundwork for how machines process visual information, and he co-created the DjVu image compression technology alongside Léon Bottou and Patrick Haffner. He became the Jacob T. Schwartz Professor of Computer Science at NYU's Courant Institute and spent years as Chief AI Scientist at Meta Platforms before co-founding Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs in December 2025.
