Yang Yuhuan was born in 719 and became the beloved consort of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang in his later years, rising to the rank of guifei — the highest position for imperial consorts. She briefly took the Taoist nun name Taizhen before entering the palace. When the An Lushan Rebellion erupted, the emperor and his entourage fled Chang'an for Chengdu, but at Mawei Station the imperial guards mutinied under Chen Xuanli's leadership.
