Born into Chu nobility around 232 BC, Xiang Yu joined his uncle Xiang Liang's rebellion against the Qin dynasty and earned the title Duke of Lu from the restored Chu king in 208 BC. The next year he commanded an outnumbered force to a crushing victory at Julu against Qin armies under Zhang Han. When Qin collapsed, he divided China into a federation of Eighteen Kingdoms, declared himself Hegemon-King of Western Chu, and ruled a sprawling territory from his capital at Pengcheng.
