Wilton Norman Chamberlain stood 7 feet 1 inch and played center for 14 seasons starting in 1959, after a college career at Kansas that ended in a triple-overtime loss in the national championship game. He joined the NBA via the Harlem Globetrotters and landed with the Philadelphia Warriors, where he immediately began rewriting the stat sheet - 72 NBA records in all, most still standing decades after his death in 1999. He spent years losing to Bill Russell's Celtics before finally breaking through with the 76ers in 1967, then won again with the 1972 Lakers during their 33-game winning streak. His dominance near the basket forced the league to widen the lane, ban inbound passes over the backboard, and keep free-throw shooters behind the line - because Chamberlain could dunk from there. After basketball he played professional volleyball and served as league president, still looking for a rim to break.
