William V, Prince of Orange

About this person
William Batavus was born 8 March 1748 into the House of Orange, the family that had supplied stadtholders - chief magistrates, military commanders, quasi-monarchs without the crown - to the Dutch provinces for generations. He inherited the title Prince of Orange and rose to become Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, the last to hold that office. In 1795, with revolutionary forces closing in and the old federalist order crumbling, he fled to London. He never returned. William V died in exile on 9 April 1806, the final stadtholder of a republic that no longer existed.
