The Palermo Stone carries the oldest surviving historical record from ancient Egypt — a king-list spanning a thousand years of the Old Kingdom, carved in the Fifth Dynasty and now split across seven fragments.
The stele was probably commissioned during the Fifth Dynasty, between roughly 2498 and 2345 BCE, to catalog every pharaoh from the First Dynasty onward and mark the notable events of their reigns year by year. It tracked rulers from around 3150 BCE through the early Fifth Dynasty itself. At some point the monument broke apart; seven pieces are known today. The largest fragment ended up in Palermo, Italy, where it sits in the Regional Archeological Museum Antonio Salinas.
