Scorpion II governed a slice of Upper Egypt during the Protodynastic Period, roughly 3200-3000 BCE, when the Nile valley was not yet unified and the mechanics of kingship were still taking shape. His actual name may have been Selk or Weha; the scorpion is the sign that marked him in early script. The gap between his time and the rise of the dynastic pharaohs was narrow, but he lived on the older side of it. What he did, where he ruled from, how long he lasted - the record doesn't say. He remains a glyph and a guess, a figure from the century before Egypt became Egypt.
