Rooney broke through at Everton as a teenager, then moved to Manchester United in 2004 for £25.6 million. He won five Premier League titles, a Champions League, and 16 trophies total - finishing as United's top scorer ever with 253 goals. His February 2011 bicycle kick against Manchester City won the Premier League's best goal of its first 20 seasons. For England, he debuted at 17, lit up Euro 2004 with four goals, and played in four major tournaments, ending as the national team's record scorer until 2023. He left United in 2017, played a season at Everton, moved to D.C. United, then Derby County, and retired in January 2021. He was named one of the best players never to win the Ballon d'Or - his highest finish was fifth.
