Biography
About
Born in Berlin in 1883, Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar after the First World War and taught there for years, becoming the face of the International Style — steel, glass, flat roofs, no ornament. When Germany turned, he left: England in 1934, then the United States in 1937. He landed at Harvard's Graduate School of Design and stayed, shaping a generation of architects while working on projects with Marcel Breuer and co-founding The Architects Collaborative.
