About

Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was born in Catalonia on 25 June 1852. He trained as an architect and entered the Modernista movement at the end of the nineteenth century, influenced by neo-Gothic art and Oriental techniques, but his work soon pulled away from any school. He combined ceramics, stained glass, wrought iron, and carpentry into structures inspired by natural forms, introducing trencadís — mosaics made from ceramic waste — and rarely drawing detailed plans, preferring three-dimensional scale models he could shape as he went.
