Vladimir Prelog was born in Sarajevo on 23 July 1906, spending his early years moving through Zagreb, Osijek, and Prague as the old empires folded. He built his career across three cities - Prague, Zagreb, and finally Zürich - studying the stereochemistry of organic molecules, the fine grammar of how atoms arrange themselves in space. That work, precise and foundational, earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1975. He died in Zürich on 7 January 1998.
