He held the Roman throne for eight months in 69 AD — the bloodiest year of the civil wars — then died in the street, dragged through Rome by the soldiers of the man who replaced him.
Born in Campania to a relatively obscure family, Aulus Vitellius made himself useful to power: a companion to Tiberius in his island retirement, a friend to Caligula, consul in 48, proconsular governor of Africa around 60. In 68, emperor Galba handed him command of the army in Germania Inferior. By January 69, those legions proclaimed him emperor instead, sparking revolt. Galba fell to Otho; Vitellius defeated Otho at Bedriacum and the Senate recognized him in April. But the eastern armies had already declared for Vespasian.
