About this person
A career general under the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship, Huerta rose to high rank serving the very president he would betray. In February 1913, trusted to suppress a revolt in Mexico City, he instead joined the plotters. The Ten Tragic Days ended with President Francisco I. Madero and his vice president forced to resign, then murdered. Huerta's military dictatorship drew recognition from Britain and Germany, but Woodrow Wilson's U.S. refused and funneled arms to rebel forces. Seventeen months in, the Constitutionalist Army crushed his Federal forces at Zacatecas. Huerta fled to Spain in July 1914, later arrested while scheming with German agents during World War I, and died in U.S. custody in 1916.
