About this person
Born into wealth in Mexico City in 1856, the grandson of a former president, Lascuráin studied law and built a successful practice while holding various city government posts. During the Mexican Revolution he became foreign secretary under Francisco I. Madero. When a coup known as the Ten Tragic Days toppled Madero and Vice President José María Pino Suárez in 1913, Lascuráin found himself next in line. His government lasted less than an hour: he appointed the coup's leader, Victoriano Huerta, as foreign secretary, then stepped down so Huerta could take power. He returned to law, directed the Escuela Libre de Derecho for 16 years, and died in 1952 at 96 - remembered almost entirely for those 45 minutes.
