Tom Preston-Werner built the infrastructure under much of modern software: Gravatar for profile images, Jekyll for static sites, TOML for configuration, and Semantic Versioning for release management. In 2008 he co-founded GitHub with Chris Wanstrath and P. J. Hyett, turning Git repository hosting into a social network for developers. The company became the hub of open-source culture worldwide. Six years later an internal probe found that he and his wife had harassed an employee, and he resigned as CEO. By 2023 he and his wife had signed The Giving Pledge, committing most of their wealth - by then in the billions - to philanthropy.
